NC Medical Society

When one of North Carolina's oldest medical organizations needed to bring its conventions into a digital era, I helped build the experience from the ground up.

The North Carolina Medical Society was shifting its annual conventions to a semi-digital format, a move accelerated by the pandemic and aimed at expanding access so more physicians and medical professionals across the state could join the conversation, regardless of whether they could attend in person. The organization needed someone who could bring graphic design and web flow experience to the table to help build this new format from scratch, not just supply graphics, but help shape how attendees would actually move through the experience.

I came on as a freelance designer, creating banners, in-app advertisements for B2B association partners, and the navigational structure that helped attendees find their way around the convention app with ease. The work spanned a wide range of specialty societies under the NCMS umbrella, including Pathology, Neurology, the Spine Society, the Orthopedic Association, and the Society of Endocrinologists, among others, each with its own identity to respect while keeping a consistent experience across the platform. The bulk of this work took place in 2021 as NCMS moved into the digital-forward format, and I returned in 2022 to support the app experience for their in-person conventions as the organization blended both formats going forward.

Highlights

Across the two years, I supported roughly 21 conferences, about 10 in 2021 and 11 in 2022, adapting designs to match each society's individual branding and colors while preserving a cohesive look and feel across the NCMS platform as a whole. A significant part of the role meant translating what the directors needed into assets that worked within the software they had chosen, resizing, editing, and refining images and banners to fit seamlessly into the final product. It was as much about flexibility and collaboration as it was about design.

Working with NCMS gave me a firsthand look at what it means to act as a creative consultant for a large, multifaceted organization, and it was a privilege to help the medical community I grew up around step into a more digital-forward future.
